{"id":142,"date":"2005-08-27T15:37:38","date_gmt":"2005-08-27T12:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/void.gr\/kargig\/blog\/?p=142"},"modified":"2005-08-27T15:42:26","modified_gmt":"2005-08-27T12:42:26","slug":"xorg-and-fluxbox-speedup-with-gentoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.void.gr\/kargig\/blog\/2005\/08\/27\/xorg-and-fluxbox-speedup-with-gentoo\/","title":{"rendered":"Xorg and fluxbox speedup with gentoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve lately noticed that my fluxbox was a bit slow&#8230;when opening up terminals, when opening up firefox, or even when entering the wm.<\/p>\n<p>I did some changes and the problem has been significantly reduced:<br \/>\n1) edit \/etc\/hosts and make sure there are lines like these:<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n127.0.0.1       localhost<br \/>\n1.2.3.4     koko.lala   koko<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>2) re-emerge fluxbox with disablexmb flag:<br \/>\n<code>#echo \"x11-wm\/fluxbox disablexmb\" >> \/etc\/portage\/package.use<br \/>\n#emerge -Dv fluxbox<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>3) check your font paths inside xorg.conf for any incosistencies and symlink loops<\/p>\n<p>4) if you have a system with a lot of ram change vm.swappiness. I use:<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nvm.swappiness=40<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>inside my \/etc\/sysctl.conf<\/p>\n<p>5) I&#8217;ve also done this to fine tune my memmory settings, if you feel brave enough..you can do that too:<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\necho 4096 >> \/proc\/sys\/vm\/min_free_kbytes<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>my system now boots faster and I whichever application I use has a noticeable speed difference.<br \/>\nHave fun with gentoo!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve lately noticed that my fluxbox was a bit slow&#8230;when opening up terminals, when opening up firefox, or even when entering the wm.
